What’s news and
what’s not?
News is the
reporting of events that happen. Feature articles are more in-depth articles on
issues or events. Feature articles are not usually found in more than one
publication. What’s not the news is an article purporting to be an issue that
is merely contrived.
Objective 1. Identify
pseudo news – the news that is NOT the news! (Yahoo…)
- Select three headlines of pseudo news and briefly summarize each. For this exercise you might want to look at alternative news sources – (Blue Dress, Black Dress; Ten locations you won’t believe exist; You can’t imagine what happened next…) Be diligent and ALWAYS cite your sources.

Objective 2.
Familiarize yourself with several reputable news sources. Identify stories of
international significance.
- For this exercise visit the respective sites for Canada’s Globe and Mail, National Post and international online news sources like the NY Times, Al Jazeera, or RT News.
- Select three headlines for actual international news items from reputable online resources. Read the articles and provide a brief summary of each. Cite your sources.
